The Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce highlighted the Steel Manufacturing Simulation and Visualization Consortium (SMSVC) at their monthly meeting on Thursday, April 28, 2016. A panel session was held to introduce the consortium and its benefit on the steel industry, suppliers and the region. The panel was moderated by Don Babcock from NIPSCO. The panelists for the session were Dr. Chenn Zhou, Director of SMSVC; Kelly Dallas, Past Chairperson, AIST Midwest Chapter; Mitch Day, Strategic Account Director, Praxair; David White, Director-Process Research, ArcelorMittal; and Mike Zdyb, Director of Strategy, NIPSCO. More than 250 members of the Chamber, from local business, organizations and governmental leadership were in attendance. Panelist were asked a series of questions such as, a�?How will workforce development, be impacted from research?a�? Kelly Dallas, stated that a�?The technology being developed by the SMSVC will be used for training and is also being used for other outreach programs such as AIST High School workshops and Materials Camp. David White, from ArcelorMittal was asked a�?Why competitor companies like ArcelorMittal and U.S.S. would be members?a�? White replied a�?Many of the issues, faced by steel manufacturers, are similar such as, energy and safety. Also in attendance were 10 Purdue Northwest engineering students who are currently working on Consortium projects. According to one of the attendees the big take way for them was that the a�?SMSVC is a great asset to the region and will support the local steel industry to compete globallya�?.
