CIVS Kicks-Off New Decarbonization Project with Cleveland Cliffs

CIVS is working on a new project regarding performance optimization and greenhouse gas mitigation with a long-time collaborator and SMSVC member, Cleveland Cliffs. The virtual kick-off meeting took place on July 25, 2022. CIVS staff, Dr. Tyamo Okosun, Research Associate Professor, Dr. Chenn Zhou, CIVS Director, Dr. Orlando Ugarte, Post-doctoral Researcher and Sam Nielson, Ph.D. student, met with the representative from Cleveland Cliffs, Prakash Hedge, Division Manager, Thomas White, Iron Producing Operation Engineer and Rich Hiernaux, Manager in Primary Process Research.

Reduction in GHG Impact by Switching from NG-PCI Co-Injection to Maximum NG is a new research project to apply existing models of Cleveland Cliffs’ blast furnaces to study operating performance under new approaches targeting lower greenhouse gas emissions from the process. During the meeting, operating conditions were discussed and geometry required for simulation models was determined.
