Stanford SLAC Applied Energy Director Tours CIVS

Dr. Stephen Eglash, Director of the Applied Energy Division at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, visited CIVS on September 26th, 2022.  He was given an overview of CIVS & SMSVC initiatives and projects by Dr. Chenn Zhou. CIVS Staff also demonstrated various projects including the “Integrated Virtual Blast Furnace for Real-time Energy Efficiency Improvement”, “Smart Ladle”, Caster Digital Twin”, the Wind Turbine Simulator, and more.

The visit included hands-on demonstrations in the Visualization Lab with AR/VR technologies, such the Fire Extinguisher training simulator.  The demonstrations are part of ongoing research to use simulation and visualization technologies to improve safety in industry. Dr. Eglash also discussed potential collaboration opportunities with CIVS in the area of Decarbonization.

The Applied Energy Division at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory conducts research on the electric grid, batteries, water desalination, photovoltaics, and advanced manufacturing. The Applied Energy Division is part of the Energy Sciences Directorate, which conducts research in chemistry, materials, computer science, and applied energy. SLAC is operated by Stanford University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.
